Thinking Clearly Made All the Difference in How I Played Tennis: Rohan Bopanna on Reaching the 500-Win Mark

Rohan Bopanna, who is commemorating his 500th career match victory, attributes his steady success to his increased mental clarity and better health that resulted from doing Iyengar Yoga.

In the second round of the Australian Open, Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden defeated John Millman and Edward Winter. Bopanna’s career victory total was 501.

One of the most successful tennis players in India is Bopanna. Over 700 victories have been claimed by Leander Paes and Sania Mirza in their illustrious careers, while Mahesh Bhupathi’s own remarkable career finished three victories shy of the 700-win threshold.

“I’m feeling really special now that I’ve achieved 500 victories. Talking to former Indian player Somdev Devvarman on the official broadcast channel, Bopanna, 43, said, “There have been a lot of sacrifices in this journey and a lot of people were with me during this time.”

When asked about the modifications and adaptations he had to make along the way, Bopanna said that, because of a knee injury, he had had to limit his play to baseline serve and volley.

“Being unable to serve and volley, which I was always trained to do and was my style, was very challenging. It hurt since my knee didn’t have any cartilage.

“I had to learn how to control it and develop new strategies for performing at the best level. I began doing Iyengar Yoga back in 2020 during the epidemic, and it had a very great effect on my health. I could work out four times a week for ninety minutes. Iyengar yoga was developed and popularized by Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar, a yoga instructor and multi-book author.

“I believe that my mental strength has also increased.” While playing tennis, my thoughts were more coherent. That really made a difference, and I had a fantastic last year because I really liked playing on the court. When he and partner Ebden won the Indians Masters, Bopanna, at 43, became the oldest tennis player to win an ATP Masters series doubles championship.

At the year-end Finals, he also made history as the oldest player to win a match.

Bopanna also spoke about how difficult the Australian Open was and how he had to push himself to win.

“The weather in Melbourne is really tricky.” Tennis is a completely different game in the wind. You must play the percentage game; you cannot chase your serve. I had to put a lot of effort into my legs since that is absolutely not my style. But happily, we managed to go through,” he said.

Sunday’s third-round match between Bopanna and Ebden and Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic will come up next.

“Matty and I haven’t previously played against this duo. It’ll be difficult,” he said.
