Until they are sold no more: How Love Without Reason Is Rewriting the Story of Cleft Children in India and Beyond

An Indian based nonprofit changing smiles and changing destinies.

As told by Susan Mathews, Co-Founder, Love Without Reason

“Because Every Child Matters” is not simply the motto of Love Without Reason—it is the heartbeat behind every cleft surgery performed and every act of compassion shown to survivors of human trafficking. It is the belief that every life has value, every child deserves dignity, and every future can be restored.

Baby Ayush was born in Assam, India with a bilateral cleft lip. From the moment of his birth, his parents faced painful social stigma from their community. Instead of celebration, there was silence. Instead of congratulations, there was rejection. Neighbours avoided them, and many simply ignored the existence of their newborn son.

In communities where physical differences are misunderstood, families often carry the burden of shame and isolation. Ayush’s parents felt this deeply.

But everything began to change the day Ayush was brought to a Love Without Reason cleft camp.

As his mother entered the camp, she witnessed something she had never experienced before. The volunteers gently held her baby, speaking softly to him and comforting him with tenderness.

Overcome with emotion, Ayush’s mother began to cry.

Through her tears she whispered words that the team will never forget:

“No one asks to hold my baby.”

Sadly, statements like this are not uncommon among the parents of children served through Love Without Reason. Many of these families come from vulnerable backgrounds—living in poverty, with limited access to education and healthcare. Their children are born into circumstances that already place them at risk.

The Scale of an Overlooked Crisis

India records approximately 35,000 births with cleft lip or palate each year roughly three every hour. In many rural communities, these children are labelled cursed. Fathers abandon families. In the most extreme cases, children with visible deformities are pushed into beggary networks, trafficking, or forced marriages.

Transformation That Travels Beyond the Operating Table

The ripple effects of the organisation’s work extend well beyond patients. Ayush’s father said: “My son will never be the same. This mission has changed his life forever.”

The Road Ahead

When a child receives free cleft surgery, the transformation is not only physical. A repaired smile opens the door to acceptance in school, within the community, and even within extended families. Alongside medical care, families are educated about the dangers of human trafficking and how to protect their children from those who seek to exploit vulnerability.

A single surgery can redirect the trajectory of a life.

Every surgery performed represents a child rescued from stigma, a family restored with hope, and a community reminded that compassion can change destinies. We invite individuals, corporates and organizations to partner with us to transform our most vulnerable population.
